History: It all began at Mithapur, located between Okha and Dwarka, on the western tip of the Saurashtra Peninsula, in Gujarat’s Jamnagar district. Mr. Kapilram H Vakil, a visionary and determined chemical engineer brought in the idea of establishing a salt industry in Okhamandal. As the pioneer of salt industry in Saurashtra, he eventually founded the Okha Salt Works in 1926. At the initiative of Mr. Kapilram Vakil, Sayajirao Gaikwad, the then Ruler of Baroda and V. T. Krishnamachari the Devan of Baroda approached the Tatas with the proposal that the latter should promote a chemical undertaking in Okhamandal. Tata Chemicals Ltd. was incorporated on January 23, 1939 and Tata Sons were appointed its managing agents for twenty years. It was here, at the Mithapur plant that Tata Chemicals pioneered the iodised branded salt movement with its launch of Tata Salt in 1983.

Living Essentials: Tata Chemicals is the pioneer and market leader in India’s branded iodised salt segment. With the introduction of an innovative, low-cost, nanotechnology based water purifier; TCL is providing affordable, safe drinking water to the masses. TCL unveiled India’s first national brand of pulses in 2010, extending its portfolio from salt to other food essentials.

Industry Essentials: The Company provides key ingredients to some of the world’s largest manufacturers of glass, detergents and other industrial products. Tata Chemicals is the world’s second largest producer of soda ash with operations in Asia, Europe, Africa and North America.

Farming Essentials: The company has carved a niche in India as a agri solution provider. It is a leading manufacturer of urea and phosphatic fertilizers and, through its subsidiaries Rallis India and Metahelix Life Sciences it has a strong position in the crop protection and seeds business respectively. TCL is also a pioneer in the customized fertilizer segment and a leading supplier of farm services and specialty products.

The Tata Chemicals Innovation Centre at Pune, inaugurated by Chairman Mr. Cyrus Mistry in 2014, is home to world class R&D capabilities in the emerging areas of nanotechnology and biotechnology. The company’s Centre for Agri-Solutions and Technology provides advice on farming solutions and crop nutrition practices. Company’s joint venture with Temasek Life Sciences Laboratory Ltd. Singapore (JOiL) is to develop jathropa seedlings to enable bio diesel capability.

Corporate Sustainability: Tata Chemicals’ Society for Rural Development (TCSRD) nurtures rural populations in and around the facilities, and helps people achieve self-sufficiency in natural resource management, livelihood support through self-help groups and the building of health and education infrastructure.
